Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
