Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the public for tips.
An important official said the incident left him without words and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
